6 Days/5 Nights
Lake
Mburo National Park is a very special place;
every part of it is alive with variety, interest
and colour. Lake Mburo National Park is situated
in Mbarara district, towards the western part
of Uganda. It is about 3.5 hours drive from
Kampala. The park is accessed from the Masaka-Mbarara
road; a left turn to Nshara gate (13 km past
Lyantonde)
An alternative route is to take a left turn
at Sanga trading centre
(27 km past Lyantonde), which brings you through
Sanga gate. Both junctions have clearly marked
signposts. It is about 13 km from Sanga trading
centre to Sanga gate and 8 km from the main
road to Nshara gate which is about 20 minutes
drive from either gates to Rwonyo park headquarters.
The park contains an extensive area of wetland,
harbours several species of mammals and a
great bird population. Its sculptured landscape
with rolling grassy hills and idyllic lakeshores
has a varied mosaic of habitats: forest galleries,
rich acacia tree valleys,
seasonal and permanent swamps which all support
a wealth of wildlife.
Lying in the one part of Uganda covered in
extensive acacia woodland, Mburo has markedly
different fauna to other reserves. Lake Mburo
National Park is the best place in the country
to see the gigantic eland antelope, as well
as zebra, topi, impala, and several acacia-associated
birds. The five lakes within the park attract
hippos, crocodiles and a variety of water
birds, while fringing swamps hide secretive
papyrus specialists such as the sitatunga
antelope and red, black and yellow papyrus
Gonolek. Game viewing is the major tourist
activity in this Park; it is famous for its
richness in biodiversity. It has about 68
different species of mammals. The common ones
are Burch ell’s, Zebra, Impala, Buffalo,
Topi, and Eland as herbivores not to leave
out the rare slightly of Roan antelope and
leopard, hyenas and jackals as predictors.
The presence of Lake Mburo within the park
is a blessing worth mentioning. The area surrounding
Lake Mburo is rich with a diversity of animal
and plant species which can only be viewed
clearly if you take a boat trip. The crocodiles,
hippopotamus and birds like Pelicans, Black
crake, Heron, cormorant, fish eagle are found
in plenty. You may also sight the rare Shoebill
Stork. Your visit will definitely be worth
your while!

Entebbe after breakfast for Kampala. (1 hour
drive).

a stop over at the Equator for an adventure
of the water flow experiments and photographing.
The drive from Kampala to Mburo should take
about 2 and-a-half hours.
Enjoy free viewing of zebras, impala, buffaloes,
topis and elands among others, as you approach
Mihingo lodge.
Arrive at Mihingo Lodge right on time for
a sumptuous lunch accompanied with fresh tropical
fruit for dessert. Mihingo Lodge is a peaceful
and exclusive retreat adjacent to Lake Mburo
National Park. It features ten rooms built
on wooden platforms with stilts and covered
by thatched roofs. Suspended under the thatched
roof is a spacious and comfortable tent equipped
with an en-suite bathroom, with hot and cold
running water.
After
lunch you will have the opportunity to see
the birds in the vicinity of the lodge. Look
out for the common conspicuous birds in this
habitat including the Crested Francolin, Emerald
spotted wood Dove, Brown Parrot, Barefaced
Go-away–bird. Blue-napped Mouse bird,
Lilac-breasted Roller, and Green Wood-hoopoe,
common scimitar bill, African Grey Hornbill,
Spot-flanked Barbet, Nubian Woodpecker, Trilling
Cisticola, Yellow-Breasted Apalis, Northern
Black Tit, Chin-spot Batis, Greater Blue-eared
starling and Marico sunbird.
Dinner and overnight at Mihingo Lodge.

the national park by road. On the game drive
along the Zebra and Impala tracks, you will
view large game like the Impala, found nowhere
else in Uganda, Burch ell’s Zebra, Waterbuck,
Topi and Buffalo.
The birdlife on the more open grassland north
of the camp, particularly along the Zebra
Track, is worth exploring for species such
as Coqui Francolin, Red-necked Spur fowl,
Black-bellied Bustard, Temminck’s Courser,
African Wattled Plover, Rufous-Naped and lapped
Larks, Rufous-chested Swallow, Yellow-throated
Long claw and Southern Red Bishop. Small numbers
of the migratory Brown-chested Plover are
regularly observed. Check the grassland around
the Mirllti Valley trail.
The impressive southern Ground Hornbill is
another rare visitor of these grasslands.
The rest of the day will be spent at leisure.
Dinner and overnight at Mihingo Lodge
Day 4
After
breakfast you will explore the Kyempitsi trail,
which allows access to aquatic habitats around
Lake Mburo. You will take a boat ride to view
the spectacular wildlife. The swamp along
the Lake is a good place to look for some
of the Papyrus Gonolek. In the morning they
respond readily to tape recordings. The elusive
shoebill may also be observed but is irregular
in the park. There are a few more places further
along the “lakeside trail” where
the road leads through to the papyrus reeds,
a habitat for most water based bird species.
Particularly worth checking is the western
part of the lake where Blue-Headed Coucal,
the scarce Papyrus Yellow Warbler and Northern
Brown-throated Weaver occur.
The idyllic Lakeside campground (kingfisher)
is one of the best places in Uganda to see
African Fin foot. Scan for this spectacular
bird around the edges of the lake at dawn
and dusk. Other species to look for here include
African Darter, Water Thicknee, Hammer kop,
African Water Rail, Spur-winged Plover, Giant,
Pied and Malachite kingfishers, and Yellow-throated
Leaflove the latter in dense, waterside thickets.
Also look out for buffalo, hippopotamus,
warthog, Defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, and
common duiker. Return to the lodge for lunch.
Spend the rest of the day at leisure.
Dinner and overnight at Mihingo Lodge.
Day 5
After
breakfast prepare for a guided walk to Rubanga
forest situated within Lake Mburo National
Park. Rubanga Forest trail exposes the interested
birder to over 40 unique species. Commonly
sighted in the area include the rare shoebill,
Narina Tragon, Papyrus Bush shrike, Double-toothed
Barbet, Ross’s Turaco, Yellow bill,
Heuglins Robin chart. You will also take a
walk to the viewing platform that overlooks
a salt lick. This is an excellent place to
see a wide variety of animals.
Taller, mixed woodland in this area is home
to the park’s most sought-after bird,
the localized Red-faced Barbet. Scan tall
Euphorbia trees for this species. Black-collared
Barbet, common and widespread elsewhere in
Africa, is also present here though scarce
and sighting the bird will be one of the delightful
highlights of the trip. Other interesting
birds to watch for in this moist woodland
include Long tailed warbler, Red-headed lovebird,
Narina Trogon, Lead-coloured Flycatcher, Green-capped
Eremomela and the Austral migrant, Black Cuckoo-shrike.
